Overview

The MCP2515 implements CAN 2.0B with 3 transmit buffers and 2 receive buffers, accessed via SPI. It runs at 2.7V-5.5V in DIP-18/SOIC-18 and is often paired with MCP2551 transceiver.

Applications

CAN bus nodes for vehicle telematics, marine electronics, industrial machinery and hobby projects (e.g., Arduino CAN shields).

Design Notes

The SPI interface frees MCU resources; configure bit timing registers for the target baud rate (typically 500kbps). Use a CAN transceiver on CANH/CANL.

Sourcing

MCP2515 from Microchip and compatible MCP2515-I/SO variants. HuaXinGou verifies genuine Microchip stock.
